Last year we saw wireless charging finally start to take off, and companies started manufacturing and releasing their answers to it. We are looking at the uNu Aero wireless charging battery case and mat made for the iPhone 5 and 5s. The product costs $100 and includes a hard shell case with an internal 2000mAh rechargeable battery.
Your phone is inserted into the case and the lightning connector and then a thin plastic cover snaps over the top to lock the phone in place. It’s relatively easy to snap on the plastic cover and does a great job with keeping the phone in place. There are cut outs for the speakers and mute switch, whereas the volume buttons are covered by plastic buttons which are well placed and allow easy operation. The lock button is also covered by a small plastic button, but I found this much harder to use and more often than not had to press it multiple times for it to work. As with most battery cases a headphone jack extender is included in the package so that you can continue to use it even when the case is fitted.
On the rear of the case you will find 4 blue LED’s which will give you an indicator of how much charge the case has left. There is also a button which you can use to activate/deactivate charging of the phone through the case and also activate the LED’s to see how much charge is left. You will also notice on the back of the case two small metal contacts below the smooth surface of the case which are needed for the wireless charging.
Also in the box you get a nice charging pad and a micro-USB cable. The micro-USB cable can be plugged directly into the phone case to charge but is meant for the charging mat. Located on the mat are two metal contacts which provide a very weak magnetic force. When the case is placed onto the charging mat the two contacts from the case make contact with the charging mat contacts and the case will automatically start charging. 2 rubber feet on the bottom help to prevent the mat slipping around when in use.
We ran into a slight problem using the case that when the charge reached 100% the phone displayed an error message stating that the accessory was not supported. Unfortunately it didn’t just do this once but continued to do it multiple times when in use. We will try and work out why this happened and keep you updated.
The uNu Aero wireless charger is one of the cheapest solutions on the market at only $100, and works very nicely. It’s nice to see that everything you need is included in the box, unlike many other products that don’t actually include the charging mat/pad but has to be bought separately. Apart from the minor issue with lock button and also the error message we received a couple of times our experience with the product was great. If you’re looking for an affordable solution to wireless charging then at the time of writing the uNu wireless charging case and mat looks like the best option. It’s also available in 2 colours a matte black and a glossy white. You can grab this product over at their website using the link below:Order from MyUnu
