These days finding the perfect gaming headset that balances sound quality, comfort and price is extremely hard, and it’s made even harder by the amount of gaming headsets on the market. Today we are taking a closer look at Plantronic’s take on the gaming headset, the Gamecome 780 7.1 surround sound headphones.

The Gamecome 780 follows the well received and popular Gamecom 777 headset with a few upgrades. The packaging of this headset is quite standard and nothing particularly interesting or special as we saw with the Backbeats Go 2 earphones.
It features a half-window which allows you to see an ear-cup and the microphone. On the rear we have some features of the product as well.
Gaming headset 1Straight from the box you’ll realise how light these headphones are. They feature two large over the ear cups which are nicely sized and padded all round. They’re the unusual but surprisingly comfortable shape of a square which allows for more movement when wearing the headset. We’ve heard from a lot of people that noise-isolation is a problem but for us it really wasn’t, and they blocked out enough sound for your everyday usage. After wearing after a couple of hours the headset did become a little uncomfortable due to the fact that it was quite tight and put a lot pressure around the ears. Hopefully this will improve with more use and I shall keep you updated on this.

Technical Specifications

  • Speaker Frequency Response: 20Hz – 20KHz
  • Microphone Frequency Response: 100Hz – 10KHz
  • Cable Length: 2m
  • USB Connection

The Gamecom 780 has a full boom microphone that swivels from the left ear cup. Located on the rear of the left cup is the volume rocker and voice mute which means your eyes can stay glued to the screen while adjusting the in-game volumes or muting the mic. Also found on the front of the left cup is the Dolby Digital Surround toggle switch. If your constantly on the move or just need to store the headset in a draw then each ear-cup swivels 90 degrees so they lay flat on a surface.
The colour scheme used throughout is a glossy/matte black combination with red trims and wires, which works well.

In terms of audio quality each ear-cup is equipped with a 40mm driver which delivers superb gaming sound with a deep bass. The headset features Dolby Headphone and Pro Logic IIx which deliver a great 7.1 surround sound experience. If you’re thinking of listening to music, or even and CD/DVD through these things however we would recommend using a different set of headphones as these are made for gaming and the sound quality you get with music or DVD’s just isn’t up to scratch – after all they’re gaming headphones.

Unlike the previous 777 headset the 780 has a fixed USB cable, and can therefore only be used with PC’s. To enjoy the surround sound functionality you will however have to install some additional software which is included on a CD inside the box. If you’re not bothered about it then simply plug-and-play.

This headset is not compatible with the Xbox 360 – PC only

Our Verdict

Overall the Plantronics Gamecom 780 Gaming Headset is a quality headset for you everyday gamers. The virtual surround sound works well and the deep bass on the headset intensifies the sound of bullets when playing FPS’s on PC. If you’re going to be using this headset for watching movies or listening to iTunes/music then we suggest looking for something else.
You can grab the headset right now over at Amazon.co.uk for just under £40.00, which is an incredible price for what you get.
