My MWC 2015 Highlights

MWC Entrance

I’ve now arrived back home after what can only be described as a hectic couple of days in Barcelona attending Mobile World Congress 2015 or #MWC15 if you’ve been following what I’ve been up to. My time there was hosted by the cool guys at Microsoft Connects, and they ensured that we were constantly busy during our visit.

I’ve had an absolute blast whilst out there and below are just a few of my favourite highlights.

Locating the Microsoft Stand

Our first morning in Barcelona and we left the hotel at 6:30am on a bus which took us straight to the Fira Gran Via venue where the event is held. Once there, we headed straight for the Microsoft stand located in Hall 3 and took camp in the Connects Corner exclusively made for us.

The stand was incredible and hosted the press conference stage, devices, a smoothie bar and a huge hot air balloon where DJs were playing constantly throughout the day.

Microsoft Presentation

Next up was the Microsoft presentation where we saw the announcement of two new Lumia devices; the 640 and 640 XL.

The 640 XL boasts a 5.7-inch display while the standard 640 has a 5-inch screen. Both have a 720p HD resolution and feature Corning Gorilla Glass for protection against scratches.

They come with 8GB of storage and also include a microSD card slot so you’ve the option to increase this if needed.

VIP Tour

Throughout the day I and the other attendees received a VIP tour around the Microsoft stand and were shown everything from Windows 10, the camera technology inside the Lumia devices, Windows applications and even a little bit about fighting cyber crime.

 Q&A Session with Tuula Rytila

In the afternoon, we were lucky enough to have a 30-minute question and answer session with Tuula Rytila who is the CVP, Mobile Device Marketing, Global CMO. She plays an instrumental role in Lumia product marketing and strategy and was able to answer any questions we had about Microsoft, Windows and the Lumia products.

DJ Sessions @ Connects Corner

Throughout the entire event, DJ Hapa and Stimulus kept everybody moving and entertained by showing off their DJ skills mixing together the latest songs and blasting them out over the whole MS booth. They gave us a run through of all of their equipment, how to use it all and even taught us how to mix our own songs together using the MeeDJ app. They came over from the Scratch DJ Academy based in the US, so if you want to learn more about them be sure to check them out!

Light Painting in the Gothic Quarter

As the night got darker on our final evening in Barcelona we all took a trip to the Gothic Quarter where we were armed with glow sticks and our Lumia devices. With help from the talented Yves Das we managed to create some incredible light paintings using the long exposure settings on our mobile devices.

The City of Barcelona

Of course, if you’re in Barcelona, it would be silly not to go out and explore the rest of the city – so that’s exactly what I did. I visited the Sagrada Familia which is a breath-taking Roman Catholic church  designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. I also stopped off at the incredible Park Güell, which offered stunning views over the city plus plenty more sights to see inside such as the public gardens.

Again I’d like to thank @Connects for making this possible and be sure to check them out over on Twitter! Also a massive thanks to the other attendees who were also great fun and made the experience even better.

Be sure to keep checking back for my opinion on the 640 and 640 XL devices which is coming soon!
